Content/Unit:

This class (AP English) is not currently working on a research project currently.  This lesson is being
taught to introduce students to EasyBib and to prepare them so that when they do start a research project,
they are ready to go.  Instruction sheets for EasyBib will be provided and added to the classes Google
Classroom.  Students will be able to refer to these sheets if they need reminders.  This AP class recently read
One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest and that novel will be the topic for the articles and website that students will
use to practice creating citations and creating notes. .

Estimated Lesson time: 45 minutes

Learner Characteristics & Implication to Lesson:

All students in this class read near grade level or above.  There are no discipline issues in this class. Several
students in this class have used EasyBib before.  This prior experience and the academic abilities of this class
might allow for more material to be covered.  Additional topics have been added to the lesson plan (labeled as
“Extension(s)”) to be included in the lesson if time allows.

Other EasyBib lessons were prepared for and taught to honors and merit classes. Honors classes also did not
requireadaptations; although there was not time for Extensions.  Merit classes do require adaptations.  Articles
and websites with lower reading levels were used.  Additionally, it was found that merit classes did best when
this lesson was taught in two sessions: Session 1 -- EasyBib Projects and Citations; Session 2 -- Notecards in
EasyBib.

Instructional Objectives:

Students will export a MLA citation from a database.
Students will create a manual MLA citation.
Students will create a notecard for each of their citations using the Notebook
                     feature in EasyBib.

I. Intro
Pre-Assessment: KWL Chart
Explain: Goal and Objectives of lesson

Discussion: Why is it important to cite?
Discussion: What Do You Cite?
Explain: What EasyBib is and how using it will benefit students.

II.  EasyBib Projects and Citations
Demonstrate: Show students how to create a project.
Click on “Biography” of project before exporting articles.  If you don’t the
article will be exported to whatever project you were in or create a new one.

Teach 1:  Exporting a Citation from a Database.
Have at least one article preselected and for citation to be exported (article should be pertinent to current or
upcoming class project).  If there are is no continuity between databases as to how to export to EasyBib, show
another, preselected, example.

Practice:  Have students create a project
Practice: Export Citation

Have students export a citation.  As this is a lesson about using EasyBib, and not searching, provide directions
for locating the article: “Call of the Wild” from Literature and Its Times.
     Example Article:
Wallace, Ronald. "What Laughter Can Do: Ken Kesey's `One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest'"DISCovering
Authors. Detroit: Gale, 2003. N. pag. Student Resources in Context. Web. 18 Mar. 2015.

           1. http://education.fcps.org/bhs/curriculumconnections
           2. Select “Gale for Students Online”

           3. Select All Databases in in Find box type “one flew over the cuckoo’s nest” (novel)

           4. Limit to “Books”

           5. Select  What Laughter Can Do: Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
                           Ronald Wallace.

           6. Export Citation

Have students leave this article open.  They will use it to create a notecard later in the lesson.

Teach 2: Manual Citations
(most databases can export citations to EasyBib; to teach manual citations use a website or book to
demonstrate)
Discussion: What makes a reputable source?  How does one evaluate a website?
Discussion: If citing a website, have a preselected site up and ready.  Copy and paste URL into EasyBib.
Talk through the process of locating information; have students give suggestions for how to complete the
citation.

     Example Manual Citation: Website
search query ["one flew over the cuckoo's nest" "literary criticism"]
          http://www4.ncsu.edu/~leila/documents/VitkusonKesey.pdf

          Author: Daniel J. Vitkus
Title: Madness and Misogyny in Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
Publication: Alif: Journal of Comparative Poetics

          Volume: 14
          Year Published: 1994
          Pages: 64-90
          Website Title: n/a
          Publisher: n/a

          From as created by EasyBib:

Vitkus, Daniel J. "Madness and Misogyny in Ken Kesey's One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest." Alif:
                         Journal of Comparative Poetics 14 (1994): 64-90. 1994. Web. 18 Mar. 2015.

          From UMD database:

Vitkus, Daniel J. “Madness and Misogyny in Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." Alif:
Journal of Comparative Poetics. (1994): 64-90. Print.

Both examples are in EasyBib so students can see how the citations compare.

Remind students that EasyBib does not correct spelling or capitalization.  If what is copied into EasyBib is
not in accordance with citation style rules, students must make those changes; EasyBib will not do
               it for them.

Discussion/Practice: Have students create citation for a website.  Talk through the process together.
Students will decide
for themselves how to complete the citation.  This citation should be saved in EasyBib.

            Website: http://dsq-sds.org/article/view/149/149

Search Query: "one flew over the cuckoo's nest" "disability"

Authors: Caroline Leach and Stuart Murray
Title: Disability and Gender in Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
             Publication: Disability Studies Quarterly

                         Web. 18 Mar. 2015

Created manual citation as a website and a journal.  Citations are exactly alike.  Both are in EasyBib.

Additional Information If There's Time:
            1.  Sometime there are notes under a field; pay attention.
            2.  At the bottom of the Cite a Website form is “Website Evaluation” -- reminder for what
to look at when evaluating a website. (Cite a Journal has “Journal Evaluation” etc).

Citation Wrap-up:
            1.  Demonstrate Parenthetical Citations
            2.  Garbage in, garbage out.  (Extension: View Wuthering Heights Bibliography -- has
several mistakes, have students identify them.)

            3.  There are MLA rules for capitalization.  Students should check their citations to
                 make sure capitalization is correct.
MLA Capitalization Rule:Capitalize each word in the titles of articles, books, etc, but
do not capitalize articles (the, an), prepositions, or conjunctions unless one is the first
word of the title or subtitle:Gone with the Wind, The Art of War, There Is Nothing Left
                 to Lose.

III. EasyBib: Notecards

Teach 3: Notebook in EasyBib.
Demonstrate for students (using an existing notecard in edit form) the different fields in a notecard -- TAGS!
Explain how notecards can used for research.

Demonstrate how to search tags.

Demonstrate how to create notecards by selecting “My Projects,” “Notebook” from the appropriate project, and
then“New Note.”  Model filling in all the fields (don’t forget to click on “organizer” to add tags).  Show an
example of a card already done, in edit view so students can see the different fields.

     Example: Multiple Reversals Notecard
Source: Wallace, Ronald. "What Laughter Can Do: Ken Kesey's `One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest'"
DISCovering Authors. Detroit: Gale, 2003. N. pag. Student Resources in Context. Web. 18 Mar. 2015.

Quote: The reversal of people and machines …  Just as the traditional male-female roles are reversed …
reversed, so are the traditional black-white roles

          Paraphrase:
         Title: Multiple Reversals

         Tags: Reversal

Practice: Have students create a notecard using the following article (it's  already in the bibliography).
Article: Wallace, Ronald. "What Laughter Can Do: Ken Kesey's `One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest'" DISCovering
Authors. Detroit: Gale, 2003. N. pag.Student Resources in Context. Web. 18 Mar. 2015.

Provide students with the quote for the direct quote field.  The notecard should include the following information:
Title, Source, Direct Quote, and at least one Tag.

Notecard Wrap-up:

Sources in Notecard: Sometimes there are no sources in the drop down menu in the Notecard.  If this happens
make sure to copy and paste citation information somewhere in the Notecard, such as the comments box.
Tag List: Pay attention.  No drop down menu.  Look at your list on the left; use tags already on the list if
applicable, if not, create a new tag.

Additional Information If There's Time:
     Thesis Statement

     Color coded notecard

IV.  Exporting Works Cited and Notecards
Teach 4: Exporting a Works Cited to Google Docs
To export a bibliography, select “Biography” from the appropriate project, “Export” and then either “Print to Word
Doc” or “Save to Google Docs” (other options are available).

Practice: Exporting to a Word Document

Teach 5: Exporting Notecards

From the “My Projects” page, click on “Notebook” from the appropriate project; click on “Print”; copy and paste
notecards into your Works Cited Word Documents or Google Doc.
Practice: Exporting Notecard(s)

V.  Assessment
    1.  Google Doc: Students should turn in a Works Cited with two sources and one
notecard that has Title, Source, Direct Quote, and at least one Tag.

    2.   KWL Chart: Have students complete the L part of the chart.  This will be their exit

          ticket.

VI.  EasyBib Miscellaneous
Explore: Students who finish early can explore  the following aspects of EasyBib:

     EasyBib Support

     EasyBib Research
